Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Despite the availability of conventional cancer treatments, exploring novel anticancer treatments are currently being practiced all over the globe.

However, the high cost incurred for the treatments, various negative side effects and recurrence of cancer due to conventional cancer treatments have resulted in a great deal of attention toward herbal medicines that can be used to curb the incidence of cancer.

Studies of bitter gourd in cancer treatment involving animal trials and human clinical trials to determine the effects of α-Elostera® in cancer treatment have been commenced by scholars and students at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

The same dosage has been given to all patients in the trial despite the extent of their tumors, spread of cancer cells and stadium of the cancer. The target group in the clinical trial comprised of cancer patients residing in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans living in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and Canada. Patients in Norway have also been given the medicine in the pilot stage of the treatment program. Nearly 2000 people have been taking the medicine however only 401 patients were enrolled in the official trial.

α-Elostera® has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is recommended to take the medicine together with food.

Patients who are on insulin are recommended to consume a balanced meal prior to taking α-Elostera® as it can reduce blood sugar levels along with insulin. The medicine has shown no negative impacts on kidneys and liver. Renal and Hepatic Evaluation is done using Liver Specific Enzymes ALT and AST (for liver) and GFR and Blood Creatinine Levels (for kidney).

Liver and Renal Evaluation tests tend to be normal before and after α-Elostera® treatment. Based on the study, α-Elostera® shows no direct or indirect impact on kidneys or liver.
Other side effects have been bloating, borborygmi, nausea and diarrhea

α-Elostera® offers an additional treatment option for cancer patients with cancer in soft tissues who have relapsed following standard first line treatment with chemotherapy and biological agents, or potentially be an alternative treatment form to these treatments.

It can also be used as a supplemental medicine to reduce the negative side effects of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Lastly, it may be taken by patients to prevent the development of cancer.
